Dalmination occurred once more at this year's X Invitational. Samina Thind took home first place as a composite team partnered with Marc Botte from Cape Breton University. They were opposition in the final round against Mat Brechtel and Alexa Smith. The fun doesn't stop there, as it wasn't just Dalhousie in the finals, but Dalhousie in every open round! Spencer Keys and Neil McPhee lost in the semis to Mat and Alexa and finished third place. Andre LaFlamme and Christopher McCain lost to Samina and Marc in the other semi-final round and placed fourth. Allison O'Beirne and Ali Abdulhussain also did very well, narrowly missing the break and finishing in fifth place.
Dalhousie showed itself to be the most formidable team from the East at McGill's 55th Annual Winter Carnival with Christopher McCain and Andre LaFlamme placing as top eastern team, not to mention Christopher McCain placing as fourth best public speaker in the entire competition. The trip itself had its up and downs, the most literal sense being when one of our two vehicles fell down into a ditch and required the assisstence of a tow truck to get us back on our way to Montreal. Despite this misfortune, everybody arrived to Montreal safely, and the trip back was less eventful.
Despite hosting Atlantics this year, due to popular request we did end up hosting our annual invitational, and this time we incorporated world style's British Parliamentry- a favorite style for central debaters. If you are interested in learning about the difference between this and Canadian Parliamentry style, head to the resource section of the site and read central's guide about it. Anyways, since we used a rotational judging system Dalhousie was eligiable to compete in its tournament. Too bad for St. FX. Alyson and Tim were opposition in the finals against St. FX and won, thus securing another Dal title. Furthermore, Andrei Deszi, the president of Sodales, placed as second best speaker in the competition- losing he top spot to Padriac Ryan of Carleton, this year's president of CUSID.
One of our largest high school competitions to date, and also one of the most well run. Teams from all over Nova Scotia decided to partipate, and we even had teams who have never debated before scouting what it is this is all about. All in all it proved to be a success.
Atlantics was very successful
