Sodales, the Dalhousie University Debating Society
Sodales has served as Dalhousie University's premier debating society since it was founded in 1884 and is amongst the oldest active debate societies in Canada. Throughout Sodales's history it has been home to a wealth of talented and successful debaters who have attained great success on both the regional and national level. Sodales is also the current holder of the CUSID Atlantic Region Novice Championship and has won numerous other prestigious tournaments in CUSID.
Sodales currently has a membership of thirty-five members and has had large novice classes each of the last two years. Looking ahead to next year, most of this membership group should remain intact due to the fact that the current membership only includes a couple of debaters who will be graduating. It is also the intention of Sodales, whether or not we win this bid, to hold a membership drive of similar scope to our successful one this year.
Sodales possesses a wealth of tournament hosting experience within its membership. This year Sodales was proud to host the CUSID Atlantic Canadian Championships in 2006, which was executed to great success and the entire organizing committee from this event will be around next year.
Sodales in recent years has played host to its own invitational tournament which has been attended and enjoyed by debaters within CUSID Atlantic and other regions of CUSID. Sodales also hosts an annual high school invitational, which continues to grow and is one of the premier tournaments in Atlantic Canada.
