Are their any MBA organizations I can get involved with?

Dalhousie MBAs have a large selection for groups to get involved with. From traditional discipline related groups like marketing, finance, and international business to the committee organizing the annual breast cancer benefit "A Toast to the Coast." In addition, students are encouraged to develop their activities if they see fit.

What is the seminar series?

This class acts as a sixth credit that focuses on personal and professional development; topics range from advanced Microsoft Office skills to career advice and talks.

What is the purpose of Orientation Week?

This may be the most important week of the year. In one short week students will tour the campus and the city, meet the core profs, be introduced to the program, and build their network. Attendance is mandatory as it will help you make the connections necessary for group work and your time at Dalhousie.

Are their opportunities to travel?

Dalhousie MBAs travel far and wide to demonstrate what a world class school we are! Through case competitions, corporate tours, and international business exchanges, our MBAs can be found across the globe!

Does the school help graduates find employment?

The Dalhousie MBAs are fortunate to have Career Services involved with many program events. The Career Services team would be happy to sit down with you to discuss your specific career aspirations, interview skills, and provide guidance on resumes. In addition, many professors have extensive industry experience and are willing to discuss how you can best achieve the career you want. In the end the Dalhousie MBA will help you find the job that you want.

Who belongs to the MBA society?

We all do! The MBA Society is comprised of every student enrolled in the MBA program. The society is led by an executive elected by the student body - with two first year reps to be elected early in the fall semester.

Where do I go if I have questions?

Dalhousie has many resources available depending on what you need. A good place to start would be to talk to one of the MBA executive members - we love to help out! If the society cannot adequately help you, many of the professors have an open door policy, as does the MBA office. There is always someone to help you.

What is the MBA dress code?

Students are required to be dressed business casual while in the School of Business Administration (SBA). Formal attire is required for special events, case competitions and presentations. As a graduate student, and the top program in the School of Business , you are expected to act and conduct yourself in a professional manner.

Is there one place where the MBAs all study?

MBA students have a lounge located on the 5 th floor of the SBA. The management building also offers breakout rooms and common lounge areas for students to work in. Many students also use the Killam Library, the Weldon law building, or the Computer Science building as work space.

What is the workload like?

It can be fairly intense at times. Also, exams sneak up on you quicker than you may think. Time management is important for your studies and personal life. You will learn how to balance them over time.The work load will be significantly higher than your undergraduate studies. Rest assured you will be able to manage with some effort. It is important to incorporate extracurricular activities into your schedule as they compliment your studies and give you the experience necessary to build your career.

Do I have to concentrate in a particular field?

You do not have to concentrate in any particular field. However, if you choose to, you can earn a concentration(s) in marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, human resource management, international business, and information systems management.

Will I have time to play intramural sports?

Yes. Although your time may be pressed, it is important that you make time to play. Physical activity is a great way to relieve stress, strengthen relationships, and have a lot of fun. Check our intramural sport page for more details.

Are there opportunities to study abroad?

Yes. The Centre for International Business Studies can arrange an exchange for interested students. Also, a trip to Europe is also a component of the Foreign Business Program.

Can I take a class at another institution and have it count?

Yes, however each class request is looked at on a case by case basis by the MBA program office. Contact the MBA Office for details.

When should I start looking for a job?

It is never to early to start looking for a job. That being said, each industry has differing hiring dates. For a summer position, hiring occurs as early as October. Rest assured there are many resources available to you to help make that job search easier and get you the job you want.

I don't know anything about Finance. Can I join the Finance Club?

Absolutely! If you don't know anything about Finance, this is a great opportunity to learn. Educating students about the finance industry is the main goal of the finance club.

Are the professors approachable?

Very. They want to see all students succeed. With our smaller class sizes, close professor student interaction is expected. We encourage all students to meet with their professors outside the classroom. They are an invaluable resource.

How much group work is there?

A substantial amount of course work is done in groups as every class has at least one group assignment or project. Sometimes your groups are assigned, while other times the choice is left to you. One major component of the MBA is to learn to work effectively with others.

Are used text books available?

At the start of each semester your MBA society organizes a used book sale to help first year students to get a break on textbooks.
