DalDance FAQ's

Document Actions

[1]
Q: Do I need any prior dance experience?
A: No! You need nothing but an interest in dance and a willingness to learn something new!

[2]
Q: Is there an audition for DalDance?
A: DalDance classes are recreational, and therefore no audition is required. We welcome any individual who has a desire to dance, at any level. DalDance does not offer a competitive team.

[3]
Q: How advanced are the advanced classes?
A: The advanced classes are at a level that will be comfortable yet challenging for anyone with previous dance experience. They are designed with an advanced dancer in mind (more than 6 years of prior dance training), although anyone at any level who would like to take the class may do so. The advanced classes are fast paced and give dancers the opportunity to push themselves just a little bit further, while improving technique and style.

[4]
Q: Is the $25 fee for one semester of classes?
A: The fee covers classes for an entire semester in one style of dance. If you take two classes the fee is $50, three classes the fee is $75 and so on. If you register late, you must still pay the full $25 fee for each class.

[5]
Q: Can I try a class to see if I like it before I register?
A: In the Fall semester you may come try the class first to, see what the class is like. If you decide to take the class you can then pay and register. However, this may not guarantee you a spot in the class as classes fill up quickly! In the Winter semester, however, this option is not available.

[6]
Q: Is there an attendance policy?
A:YES, If a member of any class fails to attend at least TWO (2) of the first THREE (3) classes in any single class, he/she will be removed from that class list and will not be permitted to attend said class for the remainder of the semester. In such a situation, no refund will be provided. His/her position in the class will then be offered to a person on the waitlist for that class.

[7]
Q: I danced a lot in my high school years, but I haven’t been dancing the past three or four (or five or six…) years. Should I take beginner, intermediate or advanced level classes?
A: If you have lots of previous dance training, even though you have been out of the dance scene for a few years, we recommend taking the advanced classes. The beginner classes are geared more towards students who have never danced before and are very basic. If you are unsure, feel free to take all levels of classes before you decide which class is right for you. However, this may not guarantee you a spot in the class as classes fill up quickly! The beginner classes, while they proceed at a slower pace than the advanced classes, are a great way to strengthen basic technique.

[8]
Q: Do I need dance clothes/shoes? Is there a dress code?
A: You do not need to buy any special clothing for DalDance classes and there is no dress code. Make sure you are comfortable and can move freely in whatever you wear. For the TAP classes, "tap shoes" with the metal taps attached to the bottom are preferred, although shoes that have a hard leather sole, laces up the front, and a low heel will suffice.

[9]
Q: Where are classes held?
A: Classes are held in the Studley Dance Studio in the basement of the STUDLEY GYM or KING'S DANCE STUDIO. There are three entrances to the Studey Gym: The door across from the Killam Library, the double doors adjacent to Wickwire Field or through the arena. The King's Dance Studio is located in the basement of the King's gym, in the inner corner of the King's campus beside the Life Science Center.

[10]
Q: Does DalDance offer refunds on classes?
A: Refunds are only offered in the case of extreme extenuating circumstances where the student is no longer able to participate in classes (ie. you suddenly find yourself minus a cerebellum).

[11]
Q: I teach/work at Dalhousie, but I am not a student. Can I register?
A: Yes. Anyone with a Dalhousie Banner number or Dalplex membership can register. This includes all Dalhousie and Kings Students, faculty, staff and Dalplex members.

[12]
Q: I am not a Dalhousie student, staff member, faculty member, nor do I have a Dalplex membership. Can I join DalDance Classes?
A: Unfortunately, no. For insurance purposes the University requires all registrants to be Dalplex members/students/staff/faculty.

[13]
Q: How do I register?
A: You can print a registration form HERE, and attend a pre or post registration date. Please see the NEWS or CALENDAR page for information regarding registration dates.

[14]
Q: How can I get more involved?
A: Dal Dance holds executive elections for the positions of Society President, Vice President, Secretary, two Member at Large and the appointment of Treasurer in February for the following year. Check the NEWS section for more information. We also welcome ideas and suggestions. Feel free to email the society at daldance@dal.ca
