2006-07 Events Lecture: Gay Literature   SUB 302, 2006-11-09 20:00:00 - 2006-11-09 21:00:00
This week we will be joined by Dr. Ann Martin of the Dalhousie Department of English and Prof. John Barnstead of the Dalhousie Department of Russian Studies. Dr. Martin's talk is entitled "Sexing the Fairy Tale: Queer Approaches to a Literary Canon." For modernist as well as contemporary authors, the fairy tale has been a potent source of reference. As a text that is anything but fixed and closed, the fairy tale has offered individuals a way to explore a spectrum of sexual desires even from within the context of a heteronormative literary canon. In this paper, I want to examine the LGBTQ possibilities of stories such as "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," and "The Twelve Dancing Princesses." I'll be looking at a range of writerly and readerly interactions with these texts from the 1920s through the 1990s, but will focus especially on the work of Djuna Barnes, Jeannette Winterson, and Emma Donoghue. November marks the one hundredth anniversary of the publication of the first gay novel in Russia, Mikhail Kuzmin's *Wings*. Prof. Barnstead will include some information about Kuzmin, gay lit in Russia, and a reading of an excerpt of the novel in English.

On March 15, we will be joined by Kevin Jolly who will be giving a talk entitled "Naked". Ever stop to wonder why we are willing to shed our clothes and get naked physically with another person and yet are less willing to shed other parts of ourselves (our fears, our image of ourselves, or simply our 'hard outer shell') to develop and maintain deep and meaningful relationships? What is it that we are looking for? What is it that we are missing out on? What does this all have to do with God and the Christian faith anyway? Lots! Kevin plans to make this session informative, thought provoking, and interactive. After the presentation we will have a Q&A. Kevin is willing to field any questions about his talk or the Christian faith. He'll do his best to give genuine honest answers. Kevin Jolly have been living in Halifax and working on the Dal campus for the past nine years with a Christian ministry called the Navigators whom he met when he was a student at the University of Waterloo in the early '90s. Even though he has been married for 13 years (to the same woman) and has four kids (so maybe he's a little crazy) he feels very young at heart.
